This is not possible to do in a single chapter; indeed, providing a comprehensive picture of the field is the purpose of this handbook as a whole. This chapter is primarily an overview of the infrastructure of the field of second language writing studies from an archeological perspective; that is, looking at the evolution of the field based on a study of its artifacts material, intellectual, and institutional and those who pro- duce them. Consequently, this chapter will 1 stipulate a definition of L2W, 2 address some of the limitations of this chapter, 3 describe the methodology used in developing this chapter, 4 examine the infrastructure development of L2W decade by decade from to and some other, concur- rent historical trends, 5 assess the condition of L2W studies around the globe, 6 provide a description of the current status of the field as a whole, 7 speculate on the future of L2W studies, and 8 provide a list of resources for further inquiry.

Through a quasi-experimental approach, the study was able to establish that there was no significant difference between the pre- and post-essay overall writing performance of a group which received writing instruction online and a group which received classroom instruction. However, analysis of the individual scoring components revealed that the online-instruction group did not improve in their content-building skill. Focus groups interviews were also conducted to know the strengths and weaknesses of the online-based instruction and it was able to reveal that students consider it to be helpful in acquiring sources and expressing opinions, and convenient for lessening issues about time and fear of direct feedback. However, when it comes to instruction and consultation, the students still preferred the face-to-face classroom dialogue. It was also found how lack of autonomous learning habits can be a hindrance to online-based instruction.

The Conference on College Composition and Communication CCCC recognizes the presence of a growing number of second language writers in institutions of higher education across North America, including technical colleges, two-year colleges, four-year institutions, and graduate programs. As colleges and universities have actively sought to increase the diversity of their student populations through recruitment of international students, and as domestic second language populations have grown, second language writers have become an integral part of writing courses and programs. Second language writers include international visa students, refugees, and permanent residents as well as naturalized and native-born citizens of the United States and Canada. Many of these students have grown up speaking languages other than English at home, in their communities, and in schools; others began to acquire English at a very young age and have used it alongside their native languages. To many, English may be a third, fourth or fifth language.

She is currently a professor of applied linguistics at the University of Murcia , Spain. From and , she was the co-editor of the Journal of Second Language Writing. She is an associate editor of The Modern Language Journal , a peer-reviewed academic journal. She distinguished the writing-to-learn WL and the learning-to-write LW dimensions.
