The following public domain book is now available for free download in pdf:. Austin Henry Layard [—], Nineveh and its Remains , abridged. London: John Murray, Readers will recognise many of the objects pictured in this remarkable book, including the Black Obelisk, as they can be seen today in the British Museum in London. This book should be also of interest because many of the places that Layard describes have recently been laid waste Mosul, for example. We should therefore be doubly grateful to him that so many of the treasures he discovered have long since been removed to places of safety. I had already commenced such an abridgment, when I was called away on a second expedition into Assyria, which left me no leisure for literary occupations.

Nineveh and its Remains

In the middle of the nineteenth century, British archeologist Austen Henry Layard uncovered parts of several ancient Assyrian cities buried beneath the earth, including the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, Nineveh. Nineveh was one of the greatest cities of its time and was an important religious center around BC. Commerce and religion thrived in the city, which was decorated with ornate stone carvings and reliefs and boasted well-defended walls and an aqueduct. However, the city was sacked in BC, and its citizens were either deported or murdered. From that time forward, the city remained unoccupied, until Layard's excavation in the mids brought its treasures back into the world.

Nineveh and its remains

Austen Henry Layard. And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work. As I was gazing on this extraordinary scene, the hum of human voices was suddenly hushed, and a strain, solemn and melancholy, arose from the valley. It resembled some majestic chant which years before I had listened to in the cathedral of a distant land.
